Man charged with assaulting girlfriend

A 31-year-old Las Cruces man was arrested after he allegedly armed himself with a knife and physically assaulted his girlfriend on Thursday evening.

Enrique Vargas-Dominguez, of the 300 block of Karen Drive, is charged with one count each of aggravated assault upon a household member and aggravated residential burglary.

Shortly before 10 p.m. on Thursday Las Cruces Police were called to a home on the 2500 block of Benz Avenue, where Vargas allegedly had gone to confront his 24-year-old girlfriend. Police learned that Vargas, armed with a knife, entered the residence without permission, threatened his girlfriend with the knife and punched her several times, police said.

Vargas discarded the knife prior to the arrival of police. He was taken into custody without any further incident and the knife was located inside the residence. The woman’s injuries were not life-threatening, according to police.

Vargas is being held at the Dona Ana County Detention Center with bond set at $25,000.
