Rio Grande Digital welcomes columnists

Rio Grande Digital

Rio Grande has added two columnists as regular features to the new website.

Beginning today, the site will feature weekly commentary by Joe Olvera and Julie Baker Carter, said Mike Scanlon, editor of the site. Their columns can be found under the “Opinion” tab at the top of the  site.

Olvera is a Chicano journalist whose work has appeared for decades in the El Paso region.

“Joe Olvera writes about the culture and politics of the U.S.-Mexico border — and much more,” Scanlon said. “He is insightful and incisive. I’ve known Joe since the 1980s, and I’ve always admired his bold style. Our readers may not agree with him 100 percent of the time, but his column is always worthwhile reading.”

Carter grew up on a ranch in southeastern Colorado. Her writing embodies the Western traditions and lifestyle.

“Julie Baker Carter is a masterful storyteller,” Scanlon said. “Her easy style puts the reader right at the ranch gate.  You can read her column in a few minutes and the imagery stays with you all day. Prior to taking on her latest challenge with the city of Estancia, Julie was a hard-working reporter for the Ruidoso News. I’m glad to see her continue her writing.”

The selection of the two columnists not only provides quality material for readers, it underscores Rio Grande Digital’s commitment to provide a diversity of voices and viewpoints, Scanlon said.
