Las Cruces man arrested, accused of false imprisonment

Las Cruces Police Department

Las Cruces police forced their way into a home and arrested a man who allegedly was holding down his pregnant ex-girlfriend and refusing to allow her to leave, police said.

Andres Vargas, 30, is charged with one count of false imprisonment, a fourth-degree felony.

Shortly before 2 a.m. on Tuesday, a 23-year-old woman called 911 to report that Vargas, her ex-boyfriend, was harassing her. Las Cruces Police officers responded and found a vehicle belong to Vargas outside the residence.

Officers knocked on the door but no one from inside the home responded. Officers also attempted to reach the woman by telephone but there was no answer. As officers continued trying to make contact with someone inside the home, they heard the woman scream for help.

The officers forced their way in and found the couple inside a bedroom with Vargas holding the woman down, police said. Officers gave Vargas several commands to let the woman go but he repeatedly refused to do so. Officers then had to physically pull Vargas off the woman and restrain him.

The woman, who is 7-months pregnant, appeared to have been bitten but was otherwise uninjured.

Vargas was taken to the Doña Ana County Detention Center with bond set at $5,000.
