Las Cruces man accused of rape, threats

Las Cruces Police Department

Las Cruces police arrested a man who allegedly raped a woman and then threatened her with a handgun late Thursday evening, the police department said in a news release.

Bruno Rodriguez, 26, of 850 Holly Drive, is charged with one count each of false imprisonment, criminal sexual penetration and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Rodriguez was arrested Friday morning and was booked into the Doña Ana County Detention Center with bond set at $20,000.

Las Cruces police allege that on Thursday evening Rodriguez was socializing and drinking beer with two women on the 800 block of Holly Drive. At some point, Rodriguez invited one of the women, a 30-year-old, to accompany him to his nearby home, police said.

Detectives say that when they got to his home Rodriguez locked the door and forcefully removed the woman’s clothing. He then sexually assaulted the woman.

The crime was interrupted for a brief moment when the woman’s friend went to Rodriguez’s home and began knocking on the door. Rodriguez stopped the sexual assault, retrieved a small handgun and threatened to shoot the victim if she said anything.

The woman eventually was able to leave the residence and went back to her friend’s home where the pair called 911 to report the incident.

Rodriguez left his residence prior to the arrival of officers. He was arrested early Friday morning when he returned home.
