LCPD: Man fired handgun near pub

Las Cruces Police Department

Las Cruces police arrested a man who allegedly fired several shots from a handgun Thursday evening.

David O. Velasquez Jr., 23, of Phoenix was charged with one count of shooting at or from a motor vehicle.

Shortly before 9 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 18, Las Cruces Police were called to the Dublin’s Street Pub on University Avenue, where witnesses reported hearing several shots that were fired from a black Hummer with Washington state license plates.

Officers arrived on scene and found five spent shell casings on Wisconsin Avenue behind the pub, and found the Hummer in the pub’s parking lot. Velasquez was with friends inside the pub but was detained as he attempted to walk away from the area, police said.

One of the passengers of the Hummer told police that Velasquez fired several rounds from the vehicle because he was bored and wanted to shoot his gun, police said. It appears that he did not have an intended target and no injuries were reported.

Officers obtained permission to search the Hummer where they found a .40 caliber handgun under a floor mat in the rear seat area. Velasquez was booked into the Doña Ana County jail with bond set at $5,000.
