Doña Ana County Sheriff probes slaying

Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Department

Doña Ana County Sheriff’s investigators are investigating an apparent domestic-related homicide that happened late Friday  or early Saturday on the East Mesa in Las Cruces.

Deputies received a 911 call from a neighboring residence around 2:45 a.m. to report a stabbing that had just occurred in the 5500 block of Antonito. Deputies arrived and made contact with two children — 10 and 13 years old —  who had run to a neighbor’s house for help.

The children told deputies that the suspect and an 8-year-old child were still in the home with the victim, a 35 year-old female. Deputies went to the home and found the victim dead and the suspect asleep near the victim. He was arrested without incident. The 8-year-old was safe.

Investigators say the suspect, who is an ex-boyfriend of the victim, allegedly forced his way into the home and beat the victim. The suspect then obtained a knife and stabbed the woman repeatedly. He also allegedly threatened the children before they were able to escape. Authorities are continuing to investigate.

All three children were physically unharmed. They will all undergo child forensic interviews and any treatment that may be necessary. Investigators are withholding the names of the victim and the suspect until relatives are found and notified.
