New Mexico State University Choirs will celebrate the beginning of its season with “In the Garden” at 6 p.m. Sept. 10 at Lee’s Sculpture Garden in Las Cruces.

During the event guests will be offered food, wine and other beverages, performances by La Catrina Quartet and a silent auction featuring items from local vendors, artists, restaurants, potters, gyms and more.

NMSU Choirs was invited to participate in a two-week choral residency at St. Paul’s Within the Walls, the first non-Catholic church built in Rome, in May and June 2012. The students will participate in daily rehearsals and present two performances of the Bach B Minor Mass. Jerry Ann Alt, director of choirs at NMSU, will conduct the performances.

“In the Garden” is sponsored by the Choral Association of Southern New Mexico. Proceeds from the event will support NMSU choir students traveling to and performing in Rome. A private donor from Las Cruces has offered $10,000 to match donations for 10 singers. The first matched donation has already been made.

Those who would like to provide a scholarship for a NMSU singer may pledge up to $1,000, and the same amount will be matched by the private donor. Smaller donations can be grouped together to equal the $1,000 match.

Tickets for “In the Garden” cost $75 per person and are available at the NMSU Choral Office.

Lee’s Sculpture Garden is located at 6740 Bask Lane in Raasaf Hills in Las Cruces.
