Las Cruces police have arrested a man accused of stalking girls walking to and from Mayfield High School.

Epifanio Pete Torres III, 22, is charged with one count each of aggravated stalking and indecent exposure. Torres was arrested Friday afternoon and booked into the Doña Ana County Detention Center.

Detectives say that shortly after school ended on Wednesday, Aug. 31, a Mayfield High School student was walking home when she noticed a Ford F150 4-door pickup following her at a slow speed. The student told police that the same thing happened the following day.

On Friday, as the girl was walking to school, she noticed the Ford pickup parked near her home, police said. As the girl continued walking toward school the pickup’s driver, later identified as Torres, allegedly drove around the student and then parked along the shoulder of the roadway.

The girl wrote down the vehicle’s license plate and reported the incident to police.

Police say another Mayfield High School student was walking home on Monday, Aug. 29, when Torres began following her. As the girl approached the Field of Dreams stadium Torres allegedly stopped, got out of the pickup and exposed himself to the student.

Neither student reported any injuries.

On Friday afternoon a Las Cruces Police officer spotted Torres’ pickup traveling on El Camino Real. The officer stopped the vehicle and detained Torres for questioning, police said. Torres allegedly told detectives that he was following the girls and indicated that he wants help before his actions lead to something worse.
