Occupy El Paso lays out its plans

Plaza occupation to begin Oct. 15 with Chalk the Block

More than 100 people gathered in Downtown El Paso on Friday, Oct. 7, 2011 for the initial organizational meeting of Occupy El Paso, the local installment of the national movement Occupy Wall Street.

The group decided to begin a full-time occupation of Downtown El Paso’s San Jacinto Plaza, or La Plaza de los Lagartos, beginning at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 15 — the same weekend as the popular annual Chalk the Block arts event.

Occupiers apparently agreed with one member who contended that, “if the people with Chalk the Block are truly artists, they will not have a problem with us being here.”

The movement decries what it sees as corporate greed and undue corporate influence in US politics.
