A Las Cruces woman suspected of ripping off part of the scalp of a former friend during an early Saturday morning fight has been arrested and charged with a felony.

Gabriela Nuñez, 19, of the 4700 block of Rio Vista Drive, is charged with one count of aggravated battery causing great bodily harm.

Las Cruces police detectives said that sometime early Saturday morning Nuñez and a former friend, also 19-years-old, were at a party on the 4600 block of Mesita Street. At some point during the party the two women got into a verbal disagreement that quickly escalated, police said.

Detectives discovered that as the victim attempted to leave the party, Nuñez allegedly struck the woman and pulled her hair hard enough to cause skin to tear from the top of her head. The victim was finally able to get away and, sometime later, went to a local hospital where she was treated.

Her injuries were not life-threatening.

Police identified Nuñez as the suspect and arrested her Saturday evening. Nunez was booked into the Doña Ana County jail with bond set at $10,000.
