Man dead after Las Cruces police shooting

Las Cruces police have reported the death of a man after an apparent shootout with police officers. Here is the news release issued by the Las Cruces Police Department.
Police Investigating Officer Involved Shooting
The Las Cruces Police Department is investigating an officer involved shooting that occurred in the area of Boutz and Espina streets in the late evening of December 17, 2011. Officers were responding to calls of a fight in progress in the area of Espina and Foster. Officers were conducting an investigation of the incident near the area of Espina and Boutz when an adult male opened fire on officers and officers returned fire. As a result of the gunfire exchange, the adult male is deceased. No Las Cruces Police officers were injured during the incident.
The identity of the deceased male is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. The officers involved have been put on paid administrative leave as standard procedure in officer involved shootings. The investigation is being conducted with the assistance of the Las Cruces Officer Involved Incident Task Force (OITF) – The OITF is compromised of representatives from the New Mexico State Police, Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Office, New Mexico State University Police Department, and the Las Cruces Police Department.
