Cruces cops ID man killed in police shootout

Police have identified the man who was shot to death Saturday night by Las Cruces police as Robert Montes, 37, of Las Cruces. Police allege that Montes opened fire on officers during a fight investigation. Montes was fatally wounded in the shootout. Here is the LCPD news release:
On December 17, 2011 at approximately 11:30PM, officers responded to calls of a fight in progress in the area of Espina and Foster. Officers conducted a traffic stop at Espina and Boutz on a vehicle believed to be involved in the fight. The vehicle was occupied by Montes and a female. During the course of the investigation, Montes fired at officers and officers returned gunfire. Montes died on scene.
The officers involved continue to be on paid administrative leave as standard procedure in officer involved shootings. The officers are also being offered counseling and other assistance regarding the incident. The investigation is continuing with the assistance of the Las Cruces Officer Involved Incident Task Force (OITF) – The OITF is compromised of representatives from the New Mexico State Police, Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Office, New Mexico State University Police Department, and the Las Cruces Police Department.
