O’Rourke wins Democrats’ congressional nomination over incumbent Reyes

Former El Paso city Rep. Beto O’Rourke — and advocate for reforming US drug policy — snatched the El Paso Democratic Party’s congressional nomination away from eight-term incumbent Silvestre Reyes, a career drug warrior and retired Border Patrol official.
O’Rourke’s win was unusual in that incumbents usually are all but ensured to win nomination to subsequent terms, reports the El Paso Times.
The newspaper reported:
Reyes blamed what he said was negative media coverage, $240,000 spent in El Paso by a super PAC targeting longtime incumbents for defeat, and “my opponent who deliberately ran a nasty, dirty campaign.”
