Las Cruces police are continuing to investigate the death of a 15-month-old girl who was mauled Tuesday by the family’s dog — and what appears to be the accidental shooting of the child’s grandmother by a well intentioned neighbor who was trying to stop the attack. Police identified the dead girl as Jazilyn Mesa.

Cruces cops ID man killed in police shootout

Police have identified the man who was shot to death Saturday night by Las Cruces police as Robert Montes, 37, of Las Cruces. Police allege that Montes opened fire on officers during a fight investigation. Montes was fatally wounded in the shootout. Here is the LCPD news release:

Witnesses to a Tuesday morning incident are being credited with helping police rescue a woman who was abducted, at gunpoint, by her estranged husband, police said.

Samuel L. Stubbs, 28, is charged with kidnapping, false imprisonment, aggravated assault against a household member, battery against a household member and tampering with evidence.

Two suspected in Las Cruces burglaries

Las Cruces police have arrested two men they suspect are responsible for at least four residential burglaries committed on Thursday.

Harley Ray Peña, 27, and Michael A. Hodgson, 22, are charged with four counts each of residential burglary and four counts each of conspiracy to commit residential burglary. Peña also allegedly was found to be in violation of his probation.
